TESEV launched its “Supporting Sustainable Cities” programme in 2016. FNS has funded this programme since its initiation. Every year, the programme builds on the network, central ideas, and feedback from the audience of the previous year’s activities.

Access to data is the core concept of the 2021 project. We will, in 2021, advocate for open data for innovative methodologies, policies, and practices in cities with recommendations based on evidence deriving from international cases.  As more and more Turkish cities are expressing interest in publishing open data portals, this is an important time to question what constitutes “open” and how we can improve ways to access data within these portals to support democratic participation in governance and advocacy.

This year with the “Access to Data for Sustainable City” project, the programme will include cross-border collaboration. TESEV will implement the activities of the project in collaboration with experts in the Pratt Institute in New York, USA (Can Sucuoglu, the Interim Director at Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative) and Technical University of Munich (Bilge Kobas, research associate at the Chair of Building Technology and Climate-Responsive Design) in Germany. This cross-border collaboration will highly enrich the content, advocacy and, communication and dissemination of the project. The German-Turkish cooperation will be complemented with overseas collaboration from the USA to reach a more international coverage.
