In Turkey, the headscarf ban has been implemented based on several legal and ideological grounds within the educational and vocational (public and private) sphere, participation in politics sphere and in daily life. TESEV Democratization Program’s works are projects such as sociological research and policy recommendations in order to eliminate the problems of the headscarf ban and its discrimination through cases and workshops in different cities.

To understand the Turkish society’s position against political transition, knowledge of its perceptions towards religion and religiosity and the way it binds belief and values is crucial for current democratic needs. TESEV Democratization Program has conducted qualitative and quantitative research in order to reveal the current inclinations in Turkey.

In order to establish a proper and democratic understanding of secularism, it is necessary to restructure the institutions that regularize the relations of religion, state and society, and reinterpret the secularism that secures the freedom of religion, conscience and belief for every citizen. TESEV Democratization Program has completed research in order to understand changing the structure of institutions, concepts and actors within the religion-state-society relationship.
