New Translation:
Almanac Turkey 2006-2008: Security Sector and Democratic Oversight

 

 

TESEV Democratization Program translated Almanac Turkey 2006-2008: Security Sector and Democratic Oversight into English. This second book of Almanac series is edited by Ali Bayramoğlu from Istanbul Kültür University and Ahmet İnsel from Galatasaray University. The book was originally published in Turkish in 2009.

 

Almanac series aim to provide public information about security sector institutions and policies in Turkey. In addition to examining the developments which occurred in the Turkish Security Sector between 2006 and 2008, this second Almanac also focuses on the discussions surrounding the positions of security actors in political and social life.

TESEV Democratization Program
New Publication:
A Tale of Reciprocity: Minority Foundations in Greece and Turkey

 

As part of its Minority Rights and Constitutional Citizenship projects, TESEV Democratization Program, published a new report titled A Tale of Reciprocity: Minority Foundations in Greece and Turkey which aims to analyze the implications of ‘reciprocity’ policies on day-to-day lives of Muslim and non-Muslim minorities in Greece and Turkey, specifically their impact on the community foundations belonging to these minorities.  This report is written by Dilek Kurban from TESEV Democratization Program and Konstantinos Tsitselikis from Thessaloniki based Research Center of Minority Groups (KEMO).

 

The report evaluates the similarities  and differences between implementations, policies and judicial decisions on the minority foundations in Greece and Turkey .The report critically assesses the progress made to this day by both countries.

Security Sector Policy Report 2

Military-Economic Structure in Turkey: Present Situation, Problems, and Solutions

 

Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) Democratization Program, under the aegis of its Security Sector Reform project activities launches a series of policy reports, which attempt to offer policy proposals to inform and advance the reform processes that will yield a more democratic, accountable, and transparent security sector institutions.

 

TESEV DP published the English version of the second report in the series, Military-Economic Structure in Turkey: The Present Situation, the  Problems and The Solutions, authored by İsmet Akça, professor of Political Science at Yıldız Teknik University and one of the authors of Almanac Turkey 2006-2008: Security Sector and Democratic Oversight.

A Judicial Conundrum: Opinions and Recommendations on Constitutional Reform in Turkey

 

TESEV Democratization Program, under the aegis of its Judiciary Reform project activities launches a series of policy reports, which attempt to offer policy proposals to inform and advance the judicial reform processes. TESEV DP published the English version of the first report in the series, Judicial Conundrum: Opinions and Recommendations on Constitutional Reform in Turkey which is edited by Serap Yazıcı of Istanbul Bilgi University and authored by Ozan Erözden of Yıldız Teknik University, Ümit Kardaş, former military judge, Ergun Özbudun of Bilkent University and Serap Yazıcı.

"Politics, Institutions and Citizenship in a Changing Turkey: Is It Possible to Live Together?"

TESEV Democratization Program holded a conference titled "Politics, Institutions and Citizenship in a Changing Turkey: Is It Possible to Live Together?" at Nippon Hotel, Taksim on the 24th and 25th of June (Thursday-Friday). This conference addressed all the projects carried out within the TESEV Democratization Program and the key problem areas in Turkey's democratization: Religion, State and Society Relations in Turkey; the Kurdish Question; Law, Justice and the Judiciary; Minority Rights; and Turkey's Military Question. During the conference, TESEV Democratization Program's seven new reports on the abovementioned themes have been launched and opened to discussion for the first time. The authors of these seven reports evaluated with their co-panelists, all revered experts on their respective fields, the findings of their research and the transformations of politics, citizenship and institutions in Turkey. The conference panels collectively addressed and seeked to answer the question, "Is it possible to live together"?
